Christmas THANK YOUs to industry friends and colleagues

Well my goal was for 100 books but I stopped counting after the first lot of boxes started coming through!  In the end I have no idea how many books were collected but I know it took me four trips from work in my Holden Cruze to get all the boxes of books home.  They were eventually picked up one Friday morning by a police surveillance van (and didn't THAT get the neighbours talking!!!! - but that's a story for another day) and the books are now in the hands of women and children in a refuge this Christmas due to domestic violence.

Thank you to all those publishers who responded and for the huge response from Twitter.  In the end I estimated around 100,000 people had it in their feed and I had a lovely response from many publishers, as well as from the general public, that kept me very busy for a few nights!

Anyway, a special, and very public thank you, to the following publishers and authors who kindly donated books for the refuge care of my work address (see previous post here.)  The photos below are just a sample of what was received and unfortunately not all books were documented, but as the days progressed, I'm sure you can see what happened to my office in the photos below!

To my work colleagues and my boss - who were happy for me to do this but were awfully relieved when all the boxes were picked up so we could use my office again!  THANK YOU as well.

Have a great Christmas and a wonderful 2013.

Show your generosity this Christmas

As many of my friends know, I support lots of causes.  From Dress to Success Sydney, to Movember, to always donating to the Salvo man because that's what mum told me to do when I was a little girl.  I actively support The Smith Family and have been associated with them for years.  And since the death of my mother in April 2010 I also donate to Parkinsons and Alzheimers associations on a regular basis.  It's just what you do.

This year I am rallying behind something a little different.  I recently started to follow the Burwood Local Area Command on Facebook.  They are our local police. Burwood LAC posted something that got my attention.  It was:

OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE
FREE CHRISTMAS LUNCH

LAST 5 YEARS!!! Outback Steakhouse have been putting on a free spread for 250 women and children who are living in women’s refuges because of Domestic Violence. These mums and kids have had to leave their home their families and loved-ones because of fear from their husbands or partners.

Burwood Police and the wonderful staff and management of Outback Steakhouse dedicate their time to make this day a special day for the mums and kids. Santa comes and gives out presents that have been donated by members of the public, Rhodes Shopping Centre, Westfield Burwood, Event Cinemas Burwood and The Salvos.

There is face panting, a jumping castle and Burwood Firies also bring their big trucks for the kids to climb into. Burwood Highway Patrol also gets into the act.

If anyone want’s to donate toys and gifts for the children, they can be left at the counter of Burwood Police Station. It would be best not to wrap the presents and place a tag with gender and age its appropriate for.

If anyone works for a cosmetics company, women’s magazines or knows someone who can donate small presents for mothers, this would be greatly appreciated. We need gifts for about 100 ladies, every little bit helps.

PLEASE PASS THIS ONTO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!

WE ONLY HAVE 5 WEEKS TO GO.
Now I work in the book industry.  Have done so for 22 years or more now, these days as a Publisher Relations & Marketing Communications Manager for the most recognised and leading library supplier in the country.  We are a big account for each publishing house.
Everytime you go into a publisher's office there are books everyone. Books in foyers, on shelves, in meeting rooms.  Then I thought about it.  They regularly clear some area - like the reception area for example - to make way for the latest releases.  They also have publicity copies that might not have been sent out.  Why don't I see if I can get a handful of books from each major trade (adult & childrens) publishing house?  Aim for 100 books for the mums and some books for the kids.

And so I tweeted.  And my followers retweeted.  And theirs retweeted.  And so on and so forth. Last manual count (12 hours after the initial tweet went out) about 60,000 Twitter followers would have had the message in their feed.  Now assuming 1% actually read it, that's still 600 people, and that makes me happy.  But of course, I want the AUSTRALIAN PUBLISHERS to read it.  And thank goodness some of them are responding! Since the initial tweet I've had quite a lot of DMs and other twitter correspondence - and now emails at work.  I'm hoping for more, particularly from the major trade houses (who were emailed independently of my tweet).

For those that can send a few books, THANK YOU. (to my work address please - just Google me :) )

Oh, and in case you are interested and I have a plan B.  Too many books.  Yep, let's aim to help more of these families affected by domestic violence and give them something that shows we are aware of their situation. It's Christmas time folks.  A few books for the kids and something for the mums shouldn't be hard to organise. I'm doing my bit from here, let's hear it from everyone else.  xxx

My Australia Day Wish

I woke up this morning later than the 6am usual weekday start thanks to the Australia Day public holiday. I started to think what Australia Day meant to me. It's a day off. I don't do anything special. In fact, I relax. Years and years ago I might have spent the day around the city, on Sydney Harbour, hanging out with friends in cafes etc but now I just like lounging around. It's not a celebration for me. Well, apart from having the day off work. One must always celebrate that!!

I'm not being unpatriotic when I say that. I am actually proud to be Australian. In fact, I wish people would pronounce the country name correctly. Aus-tra-lia. It's not Aushtraylia or Austraya. It bugs me immensely that sports commentators in particular - yes, Warnie I am referring to you - say the word in such an ocker way, it sounds ridiculous. And walk around the streets. You hear others say it. Awshtraya. 'stralia. We are so incredibly lazy with our speech.

Yes I'm guilty sometimes of dropping the "g" at the end of a verb like "walkin" or "talkin" but that's when I'm tired and don't feel like pronouncing the words correctly. But Awshtraya is not how you say our country's name day in and day out. It's Australia. Pronounce the "t" people and the "lia". Don't get lazy every single day.

It's our country. Say the name proudly. And correctly. It's my one wish for this Australia Day.

Another blog? Why not!

I can't remember what the trigger was to create another blog.  I never thought I'd blog, let alone maintain several sites.  The first one was an ebook blog.  It was originally meant to track my own responses to reading ebooks, both on a computer and later on a device.  I've worked in the publishing industry for 21 years and have talked fluent "e" for over eight years now, but the blog was more for me.  As it turns out, it's hard to separate the professional and the personal and the blog became more about ebooks in an industry sense, while trying to champion the cause of the consumer.

Then I started the Love of Venice blogspot.  That was to record the fourth trip to La Serenissima.  I still have plans to extend it and put in tourist tips, restaurant recommendations, site-seeing ideas etcetera.. afterall the last trip was a full month.  We love Venice and many of our friends see us moving there, but not yet.  Need to learn Italian (Venetian dialect) and work out exactly how we can afford to live there.  Maybe we'll move part-time in our later years.  Who knows?  It's a dream.

A favourite memory from 2010

And now a general ramble.  Who knows what I'll share here.  My loves - music, books, photography, history, travel.  And maybe general news items.  It is a Ramble site so I will have to feel strongly about something to document and share my thoughts and feelings on an issue.  Will anyone read it?  Who knows!  But part of me doesn't care.  It's about the discipline of writing and getting back into the habit of putting my thoughts down somewhere.  Feel free to comment on any item.  It's always nice knowing someone, somewhere reads me.
